Session 1: Electronic music creators and data

Are you a creator?
Do you write music?
Do you produce music (solo or in collaboration)?
Do you perform music (live or recorded)?
Do you do all or some of these things?
Are you a DJ?
Do you play your own and/or other people’s music?

We’ll be talking through the key things you need to know, to make sure that your output is recognised and rewarded. This means getting your data in order, and we are here to help!

We’ll look at:

– What you really need to know about data: what it’s for and why it’s essential.
– How data related to rights in music: writer, performer, producer/recordings – and where these overlap in electronic music (making it even more important that you’re clear on the overall framework).
– Main usage types: streaming, broadcast and public performance, live, physical, sync etc
– What data is needed, and why – drawing on existing reference materials
– How to capture your data – making sure you capture what you need, when and how and where it goes; the importance of ‘data independence’ and how to avoid being vulnerable to industry shifts.
