To open a more practical conversation about hearing health in electronic music, AFEM is hosting a public Health Roundtable: Tinnitus and Hearing Health, bringing together two guests with direct, lived and professional experience of the issue.

What the roundtable will cover

Hearing health is one of the most persistent and underaddressed issues in electronic music. DJs, producers, and live performers spend years working in environments where dangerously high sound levels are the norm, yet the open conversation about long-term consequences remains largely absent from the industry. This session focuses on real-world application: how hearing damage actually develops, what protection looks like in practice, and what artists and industry professionals can do right now.

Key topics include:

• Practical hearing protection for DJs, producers, and live performers
• What the science tells us about long-term exposure to loud environments
• Living with tinnitus, and the personal and professional adjustments it requires
• Strategies for touring, residencies, and studio work
• What venues, managers, and artists can act on now

Rather than abstract theory, the roundtable will draw directly on the speakers’ professional and lived experience, with practical examples that artists and businesses can apply to their own working contexts.

Speakers and contributors

The session features expert insight from:

• Jono Heale (ACS Custom), a hearing-protection specialist for musicians and music professionals, with extensive experience advising across the live and club sectors
• Konstantin “Nivek” Marvin (DJ), sharing a personal account of more than fifteen years living with tinnitus, drawn from over two decades of touring and residencies including ten years across club scenes in Southeast Asia

The discussion will be followed by an interactive Q&A, allowing participants to raise questions and share experiences.

Moderated by AFEM

The roundtable will be moderated by Izzy Naud, AFEM Health Co-Chair, who leads AFEM’s work on health and wellbeing across the electronic music industry.
